The Village School Provides Tips for Kids to Spend Wisely During Financial Literacy Month

The Village School, a pre-kindergarten through the 12th-grade private day and boarding school located in Houston’s Energy Corridor, shares tips to help students learn the value of a dollar during Financial Literacy Month in April. “The earlier students learn and practice money management skills, the more responsible and informed they are as they leave for college or become young adults. Doing so prevents them from learning tough lessons about getting into debt, overspending, or making impulsive buys, and living beyond their means,” said Stephanie Cryer, International Baccalaureate business and entrepreneurship teacher at Village. According to Cryer, high school students preparing to go off to college should be familiar with several basic financial literacy concepts, including creating a budget, building savings, and the general cost of living. “You don’t have to be earning a wage or salary to start a budget, or be financially aware,” said Cryer. “Students need to learn at a young age that budgeting doesn’t have to be boring or constrictive; it’s a tool that helps create financial freedom.” Parents also play an integral role in helping kids understand the value of a dollar. Cryer suggests parents talk openly about their budgeting methods and tips. For example, teaching students how to make grocery lists and putting aside emergency funds are valuable life lessons they can carry into adulthood. She also encourages families to discuss healthy spending habits, how to use credit cards wisely, and the importance of investing for the future. “Making sure finance is not a taboo topic ensures kids will reach out to you if they are uncertain or find themselves in a difficult situation early on, so they avoid bigger mistakes in the future,” said Cryer. “There are so many ways students can build their financial literacy knowledge and skills to help them figure out money management methods that work well for them.” The Village School offers a financial literacy entrepreneurship class for students in the 9th through 12th grades during the first semester of the school year. Students are introduced to budgeting, investing, net worth, debt, and assets. Throughout the semester, guest speakers are invited to present on topics including the stock exchange, and credit card management and usage. “We try to make learning about finances fun and engaging so students are able to put into practice what they learn when managing their money,” said Cryer.
