Bayou Preservation Association presents first Bayou City Detective Agency scavenger hunt to be held at Woodland Park Nov. 12-14
The Bayou Preservation Association presents the first Bayou City Detective Agency (BCDA) scavenger hunt the weekend of Nov. 12-14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Woodland Park along Little White Oak Bayou in the Heights. Participants will work to solve a mystery phrase by collecting bayou-related clues at eight different locations in Woodland Park, while experiencing nature “up close and personal” as they work their way through the park and along the bayou. Prizes will be awarded to those who can correctly guess the mystery phrase from the eight clues given.
“This event was designed to engage individuals and families with Houston’s greatest natural resource: it’s bayous,” says Brittani Flowers, President and CEO of Bayou Preservation Association. “While many of our programs focus on science and systemic issues in our watersheds, we can’t ignore that caring about our bayous starts with accessing them in fun and meaningful ways. Through this event, we hope to reinforce our ‘CPR’ mission of celebrating, protecting and restoring our bayous, while providing a lasting and memorable entrée into the hidden wonders along our waterways.”
Flowers notes that Bayou City Detective Agency is a fundraiser and a “friend-raiser.” Sponsorships are available for the event, while individual tickets start at $10. Bayou Preservation Association is also promoting a “Buy One, Give One” ticket, which allows families to attend and to donate the experience to another family.
General information on the game:
- There is a total of eight Clue Stops. Each stop will have one book. Each book contains one clue.
- All clues are located within the boundaries of Woodland Park. Signage will assist the “players.”
- The game is not directional, meaning participants may stop at clue spots in any order they choose.
- The game is self-paced and will take place between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. each day. Please be mindful of your start time. Volunteers will be on hand to help, and prizes will only be available during those times.
How to win:
- Stop at every clue spot. There are eight clues in total.
- Using the Case File, participants will follow the clue stop hintsto identify the hidden word within each book.
- To prove you stopped at each stop, participants must tear out the final page from the back of each clue book. Participants will keep the eight pages and present them at the end upon request.
- Once all eight hidden words have been recorded in the Case File, participants will arrange the words into the mystery phrase, which must be in the correct order to win.
- All participants who guess the correct phrase will win; prizes will be awarded while supplies last.
The BCDA teaser for the mystery involves a conversation between a turtle and a heron along the bayou:
“Heron asked Turtle, “How do you get so many family and friends?”
Turtle replied, “We are all connected; where one bayou starts, another one ends.”
Heron looked to the sky and began to ponder,
“Is it true, should I leave these banks and begin to wander?”
Turtle swam closer, showing Heron the adventures etched in her shell.
“I promise, Turtle said, “(fill in the mystery phrase for this last sentence)”.
