Constable Alan Rosen Details Annual Holiday Weekend Crackdown on Drivers Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
HOUSTON — Harris County Precinct One Constable Alan Rosen today announced the start of an inter-agency crackdown on driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs in the Houston area during the extended Labor Day weekend.
Constable Precinct One deputies and officers from other law-enforcement agencies — some working additional hours thanks to funding from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) — will fan out across Harris County to find and arrest “DUI” (driving under the influence) drivers.
Judges will be on call to sign orders for medical personnel to draw blood from DUI suspects to gather evidence for the impaired driving charges.
“The number of people killed or injured by drunk or drugged drivers remains at a scandalously high level in Harris and surrounding counties,” Constable Rosen said. “On this last of this year’s extended summer weekends, due to Labor Day observances, I urge everyone to refrain from this deadly kind of driving — for their own sake and the public’s.”
DUI-related crashes in Harris County led to the deaths of an average of 187 deaths per year from 2017 through 2023, the last year for which TxDOT statistics are available, Rosen said. The number equals the amount of additional DUI-related fatalities in neighboring Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery and Waller County combined.
The Labor Day effort is led by Precinct One in coordination with numerous local and state agencies, including the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, the Houston Police Dept. Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Constable Pct. 2, Constable Pct. 3, Constable Pct. 4, Constable Pct. 5, Constable Pct. 6, Constable Pct. 7, Constable Pct. 8 and METRO Police.
