Katy ISD Students Selected as Texas All-State Musicians

Another record-breaking accomplishment for Katy ISD, this time in music.  Sixty-nine high school musicians are prepping their voices, packing their instruments and heading to San Antonio, Texas to represent the District at the 2022 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention.  These 69 students, the most ever selected from Katy ISD, began the process with over 70,000 students from across the state vying to perform in one of 18 TMEA All-State ensembles. “All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive,” said Executive Director of Fine Arts Damon Archer.  “Student musicians have worked extremely hard on their skills and it’s great to see that the interest in music continues to increase amongst our student population,” added Archer. This competitive process begins throughout the state with auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions.  Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part.  From this ranking, a select group advances from their region to compete against musicians from other areas in eight TMEA Area competitions.  The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area competitions qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group.  Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition win the respected title of being named an All-State musician. Beginning February 12, 1,875 All-State student musicians will participate in three days of rehearsals directed by nationally-recognized conductors during the TMEA Convention.  Their performances for thousands of attendees bring this extraordinary event to a close.
