Jacey Jetton Announces Virtual Community Meetings Bill

State Representative Jacey Jetton announces a bill to allow property owners' associations to hold their annual member meetings virtually. House Bill 1467 gives communities greater flexibility while continuing to require transparency.

“In light of COVID-19, it has become necessary for communities to meet virtually,” Jetton said. “Communities typically host large annual meetings where hundreds of people come together in one space. That is not an option for many communities in a pandemic. COVID has shown virtual meetings can be effective, and in many cases, increase participation.”

Property owners' associations can currently conduct board meetings virtually, but they are not always able to do the same with their annual meetings. Conducting these meetings annually is a state requirement and having virtual meeting capability allows associations to meet this requirement during a pandemic. In some cases, virtual meetings also improve participation by homeowners in a community. House Bill 1467 also requires proper meeting notification, that everyone joining the meeting can hear the proceedings, and that everyone joining the meeting has the opportunity to be heard.
